Jay R. Smith Mfg. Co. History
The Jay R. Smith Manufacturing Company is a prospering, third generation company, which has been increasing ground-breaking drainage and plumbing goods for more than 75 years. Their successful growth is an undeviating outcome of the corporation’s assurance to their employees, vendors, representatives, and customers.
Jay L. Smith, in the late 1920s, who was a successful salesperson for the National Lead Company, saw an increasing need for bronze and brass specialties. By having his specialized goods made in other foundries, He began his company in his own basement in 1926. Mr. Smith named his new manufacturing company after his only son, Jay R. Smith.
In the 1930s, Jay R. Smith Mfg. Co was increasing quick enough to warrant the need for a regular full time worker. The name of his first full time worker was his son, nineteen year old Jay R. Smith. It was his son, that gave up his two other careers at the time to work for his father—a professional musician and semi professional baseball player.
During the 30s, the company moved to Newark, New Jersey, due to a marine products expansion. The commitment and value of their customer’s satisfaction during a time of economic distress through the Great Depression resulted in even more expansion and continual achievement. By 1942, the management shifted over to Jay R. Smith after his father passed away at the age of 77. Continued expansion after WWII resulted in another move to operate a larger plant in Union, NJ, and then relocated again to Piscataway, New Jersey.
It wasn’t until 1978, when Jay R. Smith retired, and the company moved again to its current location in Montgomery, AL. The facility sits on a 32 acre site in the Gunter Industrial Park. Their facility has over 220,000 square feet of warehouse capacity, manufacturing, and office space.
Jay R. Smith Manufacturing Company is owned by the president of the company, Jay L. Smith, the grandson of the founder Jay L. Smith. Through three generations of company ownership with a national network of dedicated service centers and sales representatives, have facilitated Jay R. Smith Mfg. Co., to convene the challenging requirements of contractors, engineers, and wholesalers.
