How to Choose the Right Shower Head

Improving the look of your bathroom can either mean a full out demolition and rebuild or a simpler, cosmetic refurbishing. No matter which you plan to do, a great way to improve your space, add efficiency and luxury is by installing a new showerhead.

Your shower is used for more than simply getting your body clean. It wakes you up in the morning and can set your mood for the whole day. It also cools you off after exercise and relaxes your body after a long hard day.

The type of showerhead you choose affects your showering experience, the overall decor of your bathroom and can even alter your frame of mind, so the time you devote to considering your options is well spent.

You now have a wide variety of options to choose from. You can choose a simple traditional, fixed showerhead, or an elaborate shower system. Even a traditional showerhead now comes with several different options to choose from. Here are some tips to help you choose a showerhead that is right for you.

Fixed, or “traditional”, showerheads are the fixtures we are most accustomed to seeing, they are also usually the most inexpensive. The showerhead mounts directly to the wall and is completely stationary. In most cases they are the simplest to operate, without all the bells and whistles.

This isn’t to suggest that they are limited on options, today’s traditional showerheads aren’t what they used to be. Several come with some pretty impressive options and adjustments.

Low-flow Showerheads
A low-flow showerhead uses less water and energy. The maximum flow rate permitted by federal law is 2.5 gallons per minute (gpm). However, showerheads with this option use 2.2 to 1.5 gpm. If your home has low water pressure, this may not be a good feature for you. Instead, you need to look into fixtures that are designed to compensate for this problem.

On the other hand there are several models on the market that do compensate for low water pressure, in that case, this would be a great way to save on water and energy usage.

Spray Pattern Options
When choosing a showerhead that is right for you, consider which spray options mean the most to you. Today traditional showerheads don’t only consist of a concentrated stream of water, some have several adjustable options to choose from. You can set the showerhead for a simple concentrated stream, a pulsing spray to work out sore muscles, a gentle mist or any combination in between. Some fixtures also come with a pause setting that reduces the flow to save water while you shampoo or shave.

Finish
There are several showerheads on the market that fit into an overall bathroom faucet suite. This means that all of the faucets in your bathroom will match, from your sink, to your bathtub, to your showerhead. So you can find a finish that suits the decor of your bathroom.

There are several types of showerheads available for your bathroom, from standard “traditional” showerheads that we are all accustomed with, to ones with several different adjustments to turn your showering experience into more than just getting clean. Your budget, need for water efficiency and aesthetic preferences will help you determine which is best for you.
